Care & Maintenance

Your Yarrow door has been manufactured to last for many years. However, it will require some simple periodic maintenance to keep it looking great and provide proper protection against the elements. Regular finish maintenance is a requirement of the warranty that is included with the doors.

Some signs to watch for are:

  • Hairline cracks in the top coat of the finish
  • Changes in the color of the finish
  • Changes in the texture of the finish (flaking or scaling)
  • Dullness or chalkiness in the finish.

If you live in a severe climate, or your door receives a lot of direct sunlight (southern or western exposure), you will want to examine your door periodically. Depending on the conditions, you may need to maintain your door finish more frequently.

Over time, small surface imperfections may appear, and the door may shrink slightly as it adapts to climate changes. These characteristics are perfectly normal, reflecting the aging process of a wood door, and they should not be considered defects.

To minimize these occurrences, your door should have the right finish and an adequate overhang. The minimum amount of overhang necessary to protect your entry door system can be determined by this simple formula: take the distance from the foot of the door to the base of the overhang, and divide by half. The overhang will afford greater protection from the elements and reduce the need for periodic maintenance.
